Abdominal fat and skin solutions: Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck
4 September 2020
Top 5 Questions For Dr. Schwarz
14 December 2020
24 September 2020

The eyes may be the windows to the soul but the lips get quite a lot of attention, too! Lip augmentation is one of the most popular nonsurgical treatments, and one of the most commonly requested at Clinique K. The procedure is quick and painless, and the results are long-lasting. Lip augmentations also have very little downtime: the procedure carries the risks of swelling or bruising around the injection site only for the first 24-48 hours after the treatment.

If you’re considering a lip augmentation with dermal fillers, we have some tips to set you up for a successful treatment with minimal swelling or bruising.

Research and consultation
The first step in the lip augmentation process is to do research to find a qualified and experienced doctor or plastic surgeon. At Clinique K in Montreal you can be treated by Dr. Karl Schwarz or by his nurse-injector(s).

Bringing inspiration photos can also be helpful to communicate your desires, but it’s essential to have realistic expectations and know that your results will depend on your own facial anatomy.

What are your options?
The most common fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar which is found in the body. Hyaluronic acid attracts and binds water molecules, increasing hydration and volume.

The fillers used at the clinic are primarily Restylane and Jevederm, though we do have a couple of other options available if needed. The difference between the two filler products is that Restylane is a granular gel that is moldable and stays mostly in place, whereas Juvederm is a smooth gel that diffuses in the area injected. Your doctor will guide you in this choice, based on your needs.

Most filler products also include the numbing agent Lidocaine to make the treatment more comfortable. At Clinique K you can also request that a numbing cream be applied before the injections, to ensure a pain-free experience.

Note that filler can be dissolved (reversed) if necessary.

Preparation to reduce swelling and bruising
Besides preparing for the consultation with research and questions, you can physically prepare to ensure a comfortable experience. For two weeks leading up to the injection day, avoid blood thinners and vitamin E supplements, which increase chances of bruising and bleeding during and after treatment. In the couple of days before the treatment avoid waxing, tweezing, or bleaching around the lips, and begin taking Arnica to reduce the chance of bruising. Abstain from alcohol in the 24 hours before the treatment.

To further reduce your chance of bruising and swelling, avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise for one to two days following the injections. Exact aftercare instructions will be provided at the time of the treatment, but the downtime is truly minimal.

If you’re considering a lip augmentation with fillers, we invite you to book a virtual consultation or an in-person appointment at Clinique K and meet with Dr. Karl Schwarz or our experienced nurse-injector(s). Reach out to our team here.
