Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentations: Fat Injections vs Implants? How to choose the right procedure

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgery procedures and has an extremely high satisfaction rate. A study published in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons journal revealed that 98% of the women surveyed mentioned that their breast augmentation results met or exceeded their expectations, while 90% of the women reported increased self-esteem after their procedure.

In Canada, the most recent numbers showed that breast enhancement was the most popular operation, with 24.9% of all cosmetic surgeries done.

What does the breast implant procedure consist of?
Breast implant surgery is relatively straightforward. Performed under general anesthesia, the procedure is completed in about 45 minutes, allowing you to return home the same day. There are four decisions you will need to make with your surgeon prior to the surgery:
1. The type of incision used to insert the implants
2. Whether the implants will be placed under or over the chest muscles
3. What type of implants works best for the desired look
4. The size of implants

A consultation with your surgeon is needed to make sure you are a good candidate for breast augmentation, and to discuss these decisions. It will also be the best moment to get answers to all your questions.

What about fat transfer?
This procedure is self-explanatory: the fat is removed from one area and is transferred into the breast via injection. It results in a more natural look and feel, and shows virtually no scars. The breast will age beautifully and naturally, but the transplanted fat cells may not survive long term as they may be absorbed by the body if there are changes in the overall body weight. You should weigh these options with your plastic surgeon.

What results should you expect?
A natural-looking breast augmentation can easily be achieved depending on the technique, the size, and the type of implant chosen. Your preferences will determine how the operation will be performed.

How long is the downtime and what happens next?
The patient may experience the most discomfort during the first 48 hours following the procedure. Pain medication is prescribed, as well as a five day course of antibiotics. You will typically have a first post-operative appointment with your surgeon 48-72 hours following your surgery. The doctor will make sure that everything is going well, as well as check your dressings and evaluate how you are feeling.

Most patients will want to take a week off work to rest properly and get used to their new body.
Most patients can resume normal activities as soon as they feel comfortable, provided they avoid exercise or strenuous activity for eight weeks.
